The article examines Manuel de Freitas’s poetry as a critical reflection of contemporary society, marked by the erosion of meaning and the com-modification of language. His work explores a non-redemptive, apocalyptic future, suspending existence between life and mere survival. Freitas’s poetic language oscillates between communication and its exhaustion, resisting neoliberal capitalist logic. Engaging with Guy Debord and Pelbart, the text discusses how “bare life” and survival are portrayed in his poetry, contrasting with the spectacle-driven society. Violence and dea-th in Freitas’s work emerge as antidotes to contemporary life’s precarity, while his writing, though disillusioned, persists as an act of resistance. By valuing the minimal and the ephemeral, Freitas’s poetry challenges the society of the spectacle, reaffirming finitude as both a human condition and a possibility for communal meaning. His work underscores how poetry, even in its fragility, resists totalizing systems through its engagement with mortality and impermanence.
