Depictions of Camões in cordel literature: trickster, rascal

Abstract

This article is divided into two parts. In the first part, I intend to comment on the Camonian figuration as it was assimilated into popular culture in the Brazilian Northeast through cordel literature, which I refer to as an “assimilated Camões”, namely assimilated into the figure of other rascals or tricksters, especially João Grilo (or João Ratão, in Portugal). In the second part, I will specify a biographical inflection perceptible in the images and texts, which occurred with the development of Camões as a character in popular culture, thus dealing with production focused not on Camões-Grilo, but somehow concerned with the historical Camões. Here, important notions will be those of “assimilation”, “reference”, and “specificity”.

Matheus de Brito, Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ)

Professor Adjunto da Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro. Licenciado (2011) e Doutor (2017) pela Universidade de Coimbra, é membro do Centro Interuniversitário de Estudos Camonianos (2011-presente). Fez pesquisa pós-doutoral na Unicamp (projeto FAPESP “O ethos do dissídio na lírica camoniana”, 2017-2020), tendo se dedicado às questões camonianas de um ponto de vista teórico e historiográfico.
