Abstract

The discussion of the relationship between publication and scribal culture, in the seventeenth and in the eighteenth centuries, is the aim of this paper. It also proposes an interpretation of the structure of che late seventeenth-century and eighteenth-century verse manuscripts in which the poems attributed to Gregório de Matos e Guerra were collected. The paratextual elements present in the verse manuscript and which rhetorically organise ir circumscribe the meaning of the poems presenting themselves as criteria properly established by the literate once from the period for the legibility of the poetical texts. The insertion of the poems in the body of the manuscripts can modify the meaning they would have out of them, because of their being taken out from a central paratextual unit - the Vida - to which their entitlements would refer to.
