Initially, this text will seek to present the existing connections between the categories: new, rupture, tradition of rupture, avant-garde and originality. From there, the tensions between the aesthetic and the ideological will be examined; cosmopolitanism and nationalism. Modernization theories and their determinants in relation to the insertion of the cultural product in the political and social field will also be revisited; the aesthetics of rupture and its articulation with historical time. By focusing on modernism and the cultural identity of Portugal, some segments that characterize Portuguese modernism will be analyzed.
