Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the representations and images which Brazil created about Portugal and the ones Portugal built regarding its former colony, during the first half of the 19th cencury, through the dialectic between "we" and "they'', where fascination and repulsion alternate. This analysis will be accomplished through the examination of the intellectual and politcal elites of that period, which circulated in both worlds. Studying this variety of views about Brazil, from the inside to the outside, and vice versa, our purpose is likewise to clarify the identify of a country which it' s contradictions keep on disclosing up to nowadays.
