Viajar com a imaginação: Jonathan Swift e Luís Caetano Altina de Campos

This paper takes the comparison benveen two XVIIIth Century
narratives of imaginary travels (Gulliver's travels by Joantahn Swift
and As Viagens de Altina by Luís Catenano Altina de Campos) as
a starting point for a discussion of some very widely diffused ideas
at the time. ln spite of the fact that we are dealing with works
produced with more than 20 years interval in different geographical
areas, both narra tives challenge the ideia of Progress, and the
enthusiasm with the achievements of Mankind, showing, in fact,
the reverse side of what we today call Enlightenment.
