This essay presents a general view of life and work of Antônio José da Silva, a New Christian (i.e., a convert), aka "The Jew", an 18th century playwright. It focuses on the contribution of its comic theatre as a satyrical criticism of the Baroque era. It inquires into the authorship of music and songs used in The Jew's operas within the cultural context of King D. João V rule. The essay stresses the resort to puppets and marionettes in popular plays by this LusoBrazilian writer.
