Abstract

This paper takes the experience of the Lisbon Earthquake of 1755 as an event understandable within the key-concepts of a cultural memory: a traumatic event, in which "seeing too much" is directly related to "speaking too less". ln this context, to be an "eyewitness" of the Earthquake offers a priviledged setting in which to recapture some of the most interesting characteristics of the reading of this catastrophe: its sense of the out-of-the-ordinary, the necessity of a surviving account, the visuality of the narratives and the strengthening of the melodramatic effect.
