This article analyses how the figurations of domestic spaces and domestic life in the series of poems As Casas, by Luiza Neto Jorge, contradict conservative practices and discourses that understand the house as a place of modesty, stability and clarity. The study opposes a reading of the poems to the policies and the propaganda of Salazarism, the dictatorial regime that ruled Portugal during the time in which the poems were published, in 1964. The research also compares the poems to the aesthetic propositions of the architect Raul Lino, who in the book “A Casa Portuguesa” describes popular Portuguese houses as a product of a “Portuguese way of feeling”, which would treasure simplicity.
