The commemorations around the centenary of José Saramago, this article seeks to contribute to studies on the work of the Portuguese writer, aiming to show in O homem duplicado, published in 2002, a transgression that will result in the course of the narrative, in a willful and a guilty crime, through the actions of the central characters of the novel, taken by an excessive action. With this analysis, we intend to show how the Portuguese writer updates some elements of classical tragedy, incorporating them into the hybrid genre that is the novel.
