News from India… – Gil Vicente and the demystification of the triumph of Portuguese overseas expansion in the East

The discovery of the sea route to India in 1498 is one of the most important milestones in the history of Portugal. A new cycle begins, celebrated as triumph and glory, which brings to the Lusitanian homeland a series of changes on various levels. Gil Vicente (c.1465-c.1536), a contemporary of this phenomenon, is one of the authors who, in the 16th century, shows through theatrical art that the Discoveries and overseas expansion were also harmful to Portuguese society of the 1500s. In more than one play, he condemns, through satire and parody, the ambition that led so many Portuguese to leave the country for the lands of the East, abandoning families and loved ones who were left waiting for a return (initially uncertain). This article discusses the debunking of the triumph of overseas expansion in Auto da Índia, a play by Gil Vicente first performed in 1509 in Almada, before Queen D. Leonor (1458-1525).
