This article proposes a comparative analysis of two prominent female characters in the work of Carlos Malheiro Dias: Maria do Céu, the protagonist of the novel Paixão de Maria do Céu (1902), and Iracema, a pseudonym adopted by the author in the column “Cartas de Mulher”, published in Revista da Semana. The investigation seeks to understand how Malheiro Dias constructs representations of femininity in two distinct narrative forms – historical fiction and journalistic writing – demonstrating his ability to navigate contrasting worldviews. The study also aims to establish a dialogue with Iracema (1865), by José de Alencar, suggesting that Malheiro Dias’s choice of name serves as a symbolic and critical reference to Brazilian literary tradition. It does so by mobilizing and transforming the imagery of the romantic Indigenous heroine into a modern, urban, and cosmopolitan figure.
