Abstract

The speech of the Old Man of Restelo in Os Lusíadas makes several predictions about the future of the Portuguese kingdom if the colonial enterprise continues. The historical time, as experienced by the Old Man, is heading towards catastrophe. In our days, the possibility of a global environmental collapse also presents itself as a race towards the abyss. This article seeks to relate the speech of the Old Man of Restelo to the challenges posed by the climate crisis.
