Abstract

This analysis starts with an episode in The Lusíads which begins at the end of canto VII and continues into canto VIII. It deals with the representation of historical figures through the dual mediation of words and painting. The question of the composition of characters is framed in the cultural context in which The Lusíads was written and published, in conjunction with its structure and the use of allegory; in this case, the figures of Adamastor and the Old Man of Restelo are at issue. The subject dealt with takes into account that the construction and the ontology of the character in Camões’ epic poem occurs before the affirmation of the novel, from the 18th century onwards.

Carlos Reis, Universidade de Coimbra

Professor emérito da Universidade de Coimbra. Autor de mais de 30 livros, publicados em Portugal, Espanha, Itália, Alemanha, França e Brasil, ensinou como professor visitante em universidades de Espanha, dos Estados Unidos e do Brasil. Coordena a Edição Crítica das Obras Eça de Queirós (Imprensa Nacional). Foi diretor da Biblioteca Nacional (1998-2002), reitor da Universidade Aberta (2006-2011), presidente da Associação Internacional de Lusitanistas (1999-2000) e comissário para o Centenário de José Saramago (2022). Recebeu os prémios Jacinto do Prado Coelho (1996), Eduardo Lourenço (2019) e Vergílio Ferreira (2020).
